After Stuttgart triumph, Ostapenko comes crashing down in Madrid

The days roll on but bring no consistency for Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian, known for her ability to demolish opponents when she’s in form, delivered top-tier tennis in Stuttgart, where she claimed the title on Monday by defeating world No. 2 Iga Świątek and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka back-to-back. Entering Madrid this Thursday, Ostapenko fell hard against her compatriot Anastasija Sevastova. The latter, returning to the tour after a year away, used her protected ranking to enter the main draw. Sevastova had already taken down Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round (6-4, 7-5) and continued her strong form today against the world No. 18, securing a 7-6, 6-2 victory in just an hour and a half. Ostapenko’s level was far from what she displayed in Stuttgart, winning only three service games in the entire match and dropping the last six games straight—from 2-0 to 2-6 in the second set. Sevastova, a 2018 US Open semi-finalist, will now face Diana Shnaider for a spot in the round of 16.
