Fresh off Stuttgart title, Ostapenko comes crashing down in Madrid

The days are unpredictable for Jelena Ostapenko.
The Latvian, known for her ability to dominate when she’s in top form, delivered high-level tennis in Stuttgart, where she claimed the title on Monday after back-to-back wins over world No. 2 Iga Świątek and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.
But on Thursday in Madrid, Ostapenko suffered a sudden fall against her compatriot Anastasija Sevastova. Sevastova, returning to the tour after a year away, used her protected ranking to enter the main draw.
After defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round (6-4, 7-5), she once again found her rhythm against the world No. 18, winning 7-6, 6-2 in an hour and a half.
Ostapenko’s level was far from what she had shown in Stuttgart, winning just three service games in the entire match and dropping the last six games from 2-0 to 2-6 in the second set.
Sevastova, a 2018 US Open semifinalist, will face Diana Shnaider for a spot in the round of 16.
