Crowned in Stuttgart on Monday, Ostapenko comes crashing down in Madrid

The days follow but don’t look the same for Jelena Ostapenko. The Latvian, known for her ability to sweep aside everything in her path on a good day, delivered high-level tennis at the Stuttgart tournament, which she won on Monday by defeating world No. 2 Iga Swiatek and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka back-to-back. Competing in Madrid this Thursday, Ostapenko fell hard against her compatriot Anastasija Sevastova. The latter, returning to the tour after a year away, used her protected ranking to enter the main draw. She had already beaten Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the first round (6-4, 7-5) and continued her strong form today against the world No. 18, winning 7-6, 6-2 in an hour and a half of play. Ostapenko displayed a level far below what she had shown in Stuttgart, winning only three service games in the entire match and losing the last six games of the encounter, from 2-0 to 2-6 in the second set. Sevastova, who reached the US Open semi-finals in 2018, will face Diana Shnaider for a place in the last 16.
