Blow for Arthur Fils, knocked out early in Madrid

Arthur Fils fell at the first hurdle in Madrid against Comesana (7-6, 6-4). Trailing 1-5 in the first set, the Argentine turned the tide to win the set 7-6. The 24-year-old then showed great opportunism to break his opponent’s serve and clinch the match. Comesana ended the Frenchman’s streak of four consecutive first-round victories. A quarter-finalist in Monte-Carlo and Barcelona, this is a tough setback for France’s top-ranked player, who exits the Spanish tournament prematurely. Having defeated Martinez in the previous round, the Argentine will face his compatriot Cerundolo for a place in the last 16.
