Zverev dismisses Bautista Agut and advances to the third round of the Madrid Masters 1000

Fresh from his triumph at the ATP 500 tournament in Munich, Alexander Zverev arrives in Madrid with confidence after a challenging start to the season following his defeat in the Australian Open final against Jannik Sinner. The world No. 2 heads to the Spanish capital eager to build momentum, having already won this tournament in 2018 and 2021. Facing veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in his opening match of the 2025 edition, Zverev left little for his opponent to work with (31 winners to 4, only 8 unforced errors, 10 aces, and no break points conceded). After losing his first two encounters against the Spaniard, Zverev now leads their head-to-head 6-2. The German has now secured six consecutive victories on clay, dropping just one set during this run—in his quarter-final clash against Tallon Griekspoor in Bavaria. The three-time Grand Slam finalist will next face the winner of the match between Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Nuno Borges for a place in the last 16. "This is my favourite centre court on the tour—I’ve only lost twice here. I hope that record stays intact over the next ten days," Zverev told ATP media after his victory.
