Bitter Defeat for Jacquemot Against Jabeur in Berlin Qualifiers

Ons Jabeur and Elsa Jacquemot faced off this Saturday in the first round of the WTA 500 Berlin qualifiers. Jabeur, a two-time Wimbledon finalist (2022 and 2023), returned to one of her favourite surfaces but nearly fell into Jacquemot’s trap. The Frenchwoman had won the first set before Jabeur levelled the score. The third set, lasting an hour, provided real entertainment for those who came to watch the match. The two players were neck-and-neck until the tie-break, which was full of twists. Jacquemot first saved two match points before slipping to 7-7 and taking a medical timeout. Despite the scare, the world No. 113 fought back and managed to fend off two more match points. She had the opportunity to close the match at 10-9 and 11-10 in her favour, but after 24 contested points and a score of 13-11, she ultimately lost the tie-break. Jabeur, who painfully qualified (4-6, 7-5, 7-6) for the second round of the qualifiers, will now play for a spot in the main draw against Xinyu Wang. Another French player in Berlin, Chloé Paquet, lost to Ajla Tomljanovic (0-6, 6-3, 6-4).
